Transcript: Montel Williams' Battle With M.S. Hannity & Colmes
Source: FoxNews.com January 14, 2004
ALAN COLMES, CO-HOST: Television veteran -- don't you hate that word, veteran? -- Montel Williams -- It would apply to people that are old in this business, have been in it for a long time. Huge success with his daytime talk show, but since 1999 he's also been fighting constant pain and depression from multiple sclerosis. In his new book, "Climbing Higher," he talks how he almost took his own life and why his love for his children gave him the strength to go on living.

Montel Williams on his use of Medical Marijuana

Montel Williams has Multiple Sclerosis and uses medical marijuana to treat his disease.

Montel Williams: 'Climbing Higher'
NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2004
www.cbsnews.com/stories/2...2184.shtml

Another way he has dealt with the pain has been via painkillers. In his book he also reveals his marijuana use.

He says, I spent 22 years in the service supporting, defending our Constitution of the United States, I fought in the war against drugs. I want to tell you right now in this country, we need to start thinking about compassion.

He proposed changing marijuana from class 1 drug to class 2 drug. He points out,
How dare someone tell me they can prescribe morphine, vicodin, percocet. Make the drugs most addictive, name the most addictive drug, they can give me and I can be a walking member of the society by taking that garbage, but my doctor, who has prescribed it for me, cant prescribe medicinal marijuana? Why? Because we have an idea everybody who does it sits around smoking. There are 50 different ways to utilize it. You can eat it; you can process it into a liquid; or you can turn it into a pill form. The willow tree was taken apart about 200 years ago and turned into aspirin. And we all take it.

Montel Williams: Marijuana is the best tool for me. January 08 04

Montel Williams goes to pot 07jan04
On November 3, Montel Williams was briefly detained at Detroit Metro Airport, where baggage screeners found a glass pipe and residue of a marijuana by-product in his bags. That's when the talk show host, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, was outed as a user of the herb for medicinal purposes.

In his first interview after the airport discovery, Williams makes no apologies. In fact, he devotes several chapters to the case for medical marijuana in his new autobiography, "Climbing Higher," in bookstores today. He clears the air to TV Guide Online.

Q. What happened to you in Detroit?

A. When my bags were going through a metal detector at the Detroit airport, the security people found my needles. I take injectable drugs every day. Then, one guy found a perfectly clean glass pipe that looks like an egg. He said, "What do you smoke in it?" I said, "None of your business." And it pissed him off. I also had a little bottle that had been in my bag for a month. It had less than a twentieth of a gram of kef residue. He called the police. They had to give me a paraphernalia violation. (Williams paid a $100 fine.) They said there was too little to bother testing.

Q. Have you done a show on medical marijuana?

A. I'm doing a show on Jan. 13 about the book and this issue. The model Emme, whose father died of MS complications, is going to interview me. I think it's time for a change. I hope to inspire others to take a stand. You cannot tell me that if one of George Bush's daughters came to him and said, "This is the only thing that will help my pain," he'd say, "No, baby, you have to suffer. I'll lay you down on a bed and hook you up to a morphine drip, and when you wake up in four or five days, we'll talk."

Q. Why do you use it?

A. It eases depression in some ways. It helps sleeping disorders and it eases nerve pain.

Q. Why not use any of the legal painkillers?

A. I attempted to use some. Oxycontin and Vicodin are extremely addictive.
Percocet didn't work. Marijuana is the best tool for me.

Today I viewed someone I have never really watched, by coincidence I turned on the tube and there was Montel Williams discussing his new book Climbing Higher. The book I knew of, and the fact he uses medicinal Ganja for his MS. But this was straight up advocating on prime time mainstream TV and that would be almost historical. I believe he blew the doors off the place with very credible references in the audience and not one member of the audience scoffed or even questioned or commented against it. Not one. Patients testifying and Doctors testifying. Very moving, especially for television. Almost total truth though he did slide into politics a little. I can't blame the medicinal users for feeling more worthy because of their illnesses. I've helped them get it a few decades now and have all the compassion I can for them... but,
I'll never change my feelings of the fact that healthy people using shouldn't be in cages either. That religious or re-creational use has absolutely nothing to do with the medicinal benefits, and can in no way shape or form, change the physical properties of Ganja used to treat a wide range of symptoms for a wide range of illnesses. Or that anyone would give up legal Pharmaceuticals that worked, and suffer through their symptoms just to smoke pot that didn't work, quasi legally. Its always been an either or, is or isn't and now finally its all being corroborated on nationwide television. It was informative TV and I always thought that was mostly an oxymoron.
I'm waiting for the transcript. Hope this is replayed. Maybe then someday they'll realize Hemp doesn't change its tensile strength or versatility because of users either. The Ganjawar exists because people profit on it, it has very little to do with the dangers of using Ganja because the "dangers" are in the prohibition. If there were no profits in this war, no one would show up to fight it.

CLIMBING HIGHER
www.montelshow.com/show/todays.htm
Today Montel Williams says he will experience one of the most difficult shows he has ever participated in. With the help of fashion model, Emme, Montel will put himself in the hot seat and answer some very painful questions about his experiences with MS. He'll discuss in detail some of his most personal information that he has written about in his new book, Climbing Higher. For the first time he'll reveal the depths of depression that he has been suffering from ever since his diagnosis with MS - including terrifying thoughts of suicide. He'll discuss the physical torture of neuralgia - the terrible nerve pain that MS patients are afflicted with - and how it has affected his life. Montel will also open up about some of the treatments he has used to help him cope with the daily pain he lives with.

Therapeutic Hemp Oil by Andrew Weil, M.D.
www.ratical.com/renewable...pHoil.html
The nutritional composition of oil from the marijuana plant could be beneficial to your health. To most people, Cannabis sativa is synonymous with marijuana, but the plant's Latin name means the "useful hemp." Species designated sativa (useful) are usually among the most important of all crops. In fact, the utility of hemp is manifold: the plant has provided human beings with fiber, edible seeds, an edible oil, and medicine, not just a notorious mind-altering drug.

MARIJUANA RESCHEDULING PETITION
FRANCIS L. YOUNG, Administrative Law Judge
www.marijuana.org/young1.html
Dr. Andrew Weil, a general medicine practitioner in Tucson, Arizona, who also teaches at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, accepts marijuana as having a medical use in the treatment of spasticity. In multiple sclerosis patients the muscles become tense and rigid because their nerve supply is interrupted. Marijuana relieves this spasticity in many patients, he has found. He would prescribe it to selected patients if it were legally available,

Webster's Dictionary 1952
Bhang-(bang). n [Hind.from Sans.. bhanga,hemp]
An Indian variety of the common hemp, the resin of which is highly narcotic and intoxicant, and a popular Oriental stimulant, otherwise called hashish. Also employed in medicine, for its anodyne, hyponotic, and anti-spasmodic qualities; also spelled bang, beng.

Pain Drove Me To Pot

Multiple sclerosis sufferer Biz Ivol has found a way to ease her shakes and pains - she smokes cannabis, as advised by her doctor. The Orkney Islander also sends "care parcels" to other sufferers.

Cannabis Campaigner To Take Own Life Jun 13, 2003
A wheelchair-bound cannabis campaigner plans to take her own life with an overdose of paracetamol and champagne after putting her case to legalise the drug at a court case next week. Biz Ivol, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, is already planning her own funeral and has had a cardboard coffin delivered to her home in Orkney. She says she desperately wants to end her life because of the crippling pain from the illness which makes her feel like a prisoner in her own body. However, she has pledged that she will first of all fight her charges of possessing and supplying cannabis, which she claims alleviates her suffering. Continued...

Hashing Out Marijuana
Articulate J. David Sapp seems to be an ideal spokesman for a proposed Columbia ordinance that seeks to legalize marijuana for medicinal use and make possession of small amounts of marijuana a municipal offense. Until Sapp returned to Columbia four years ago, he had a doctors prescription that allowed him to buy marijuana-laced brownies from San Franciscos Cannabis Club. He said the drug seemed to be the only thing that would help lessen the tightening and spasms of his muscles, which are caused by multiple sclerosis.

Pot Guidelines Soothe Fears By Chris Smith
The Press Democrat June 13, 2001
Beckie Nikkel, a mother and Christian missionary in Santa Rosa, has a medical secret. She said she's thankful to Sonoma County authorities for allowing her to feel safer talking about it. Nikkel, 47, uses marijuana for relief from the spasms and other debilitating effects of multiple sclerosis. She has pretty much kept word of the medication to herself, she said, because of the stigma that surrounds marijuana and because of the chance that narcotics police might appear at her door. Massive Statewide Billboard Campaign Proclaims: "Medical
Marijuana: Compassion Not Federal Prison" (excerpted)
www.canorml.org/news/bill...paign.html
In all federal medical marijuana prosecutions jurors are not told about the medical issues for which marijuana was being used. In Bryans case the jury was not told that he nearly died in an automobile accident in 1983 when a VW Beetle in which he was a passenger hit a pole. He had 15 inches of lacerations in his skull, his Sternum was fractured, two ribs were broken and the T2 and T3 vertebrae suffered compression fractures. The surgery just to stitch his head together lasted 2 1/2 hours. He was in a coma for two days. The surgeon said he was lucky not to be a vegetable or dead. Bryan began two years of physical therapy. He was told that the compression fractures would never heal. He suffers from chronic pain. He was prescribed codeine and Vicodin for the pain. In 1983, his orthopedic surgeon recommended marijuana as a drug that could relieve pain. Bryan used cannabis from 1983 to 1997. Using marijuana reduced the pain level from level 10 to level 1. While using cannabis in his treatment, he finished high school; finished the grueling program for a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University at Chico in May 1991 (only 1 in 5 who enter the program graduate); and finished law school at California Northern School of Law in May 1998. Bryan claims to have been growing marijuana for him and other seriously ill patients.

In particular, marihuana is becoming increasingly recognized as a drug of choice for the pain that accompanies muscle spasm, which is often chronic and debilitating, especially in paraplegics, quadriplegics, other victims of traumatic nerve injury, and people suffering from multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. Many of them have discovered that cannabis not only allows them to avoid the risks of other drugs, but also reduces muscle spasms and tremors; sometimes they are even able to leave their wheelchairs.
