"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."
Federal Bureau of Narcotics Chief Harry J. Anslinger, 1929 Founding statement of the war on cannabis.

History of Drug Use and Prohibition
www.sodaknorml.org/history.htm

Prohibition was introduced as a fraud; it has been nursed as a fraud. It is wrapped in the livery of Heaven, but it comes to serve the devil. It comes to regulate by law our appetites and our daily lives. It comes to tear down liberty and build up fanaticism, hypocrisy, and intolerance. It comes to confiscate by legislative decree the property of many of our fellow citizens. It comes to send spies, detectives, and informers into our homes; to have us arrested and carried before courts and condemned to fines and imprisonments. It comes to dissipate the sunlight of happiness, peace, and prosperity in which we are now living and to fill our land with alienations, estrangements, and bitterness.

It comes to bring us evil --only evil-- and that continually. Let us rise in our might as one and overwhelm it with such indignation that we shall never hear of it again as long as grass grows and water runs.

(From an 1887 speech by Roger Q. Mills of Texas; quoted more than once during the alcohol prohibition debates in Congress. He proved to be a prophet, as the years 1918-1933 taught us. We're learning the truth of this prophecy again in the so-called "war on drugs".)

WAR ON TRUTH
The Secret Battle for the American Mind
An Interview with John Stauber By Derrick Jensen

Australian academic Alex Carey once wrote that "the twentieth century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy."

A Short History of Manufactured Fibers
www.fibersource.com/f-tutor/history.htm
Nylon The Miracle Fiber
In September 1931, American chemist Wallace Carothers reported on research carried out in the laboratories of the DuPont Company on giant molecules called polymers. He focused his work on a fiber referred to simply as 66, a number derived from its molecular structure. Nylon, the miracle fiber, was born. The Chemical Heritage Foundation is currently featuring an exhibit on the history of nylon.

By 1938, Paul Schlack of the I.G. Farben Company in Germany, polymerized caprolactam and created a different form of the polymer, identified simply as nylon 6.

In 1932 IG gave Adolf Hitler its full support during the election and so Hitler was presented with the Chancellorship of Germany. Without the support of the IG and the rest of the German monopolies and cartels, Hitler could not have won his political fight. And the German industrialists could see that without Hitler their empires would crumble. ( Click here , Pg. 8)

Concerning the history of Bayer AG and other companies
Some of the great pharmaceutical companies of today owe their existence to profits from the trade of heroin and morphine in an era which laid the foundations for the self-perpetuating cycles of addiction to these drugs inmodern society.

At the turn of the century Bayer were applying the same mass-marketing tactics to heroin as it had used so successfully with aspirin. Bayer's international advertising campaign promoted heroin as a panacea for infant respiratory ailments. (page 207)

The following passage in a letter from the company to the camp in Auschwitz demonstrates the attitude of I.G. Farben to the subjects of it drug testing program:

n contemplation of experiments with the new soporific drug, we would appreciate your procuring for us a number of women. . . . We received your answer but consider the price of 200 marks a woman excessive. We propose to pay not more than 170 marks a head. If agreeable, we will take possession of the women. We need approximately150. . . Received the order of 150 women. Despite their emaciated condition, they were found satisfactory. We shall keep you posted on developments concerning this experiment. . . The tests were made. All subjects died. We shall contact you shortly on the subject of a new load (Glover, 1977: 58)

History
I.G.Farbenindustrie AG
www.hoechst.com/historie/...ie_en7.htm
I.G. Farben's new developments such as synthetic rubber and synthetic gasoline. As those products were of great strategic value to Adolf Hitler's war plans, cooperation between some sections of I.G. Farben and the Reich Government was gradually intensified. Then, in 1936, as part of the four-year plan, the company became largely dependent on the Nazi regime and this led to its ill-fated involvement in Nazi crimes.

History of the Hoechst AG

Farbwerke" portion of the name referred to the most important field of activity of the predecessor companies, which had profoundly changed the colorful world of dyes since the mid 19th century. Soon thereafter, work in industrial chemistry and the life sciences in the form of pharmaceuticals and fertilizers began.

Bayer Research, innovation, and perseverance
pubs.acs.org/journals/pha...pany5.html
The 19th-century discovery that coal tar, a sticky, black byproduct of the coal industry, could be transformed into brilliant dyes sparked an eruption of research as chemists throughout Europe searched for alternatives to expensive natural dyes

Just before the turn of the century, Bayer began marketing two notable drugs. In 1898, the company sold diacetylmorphine under the trade name Heroin; in 1899, it sold acetylsalicylic acid under the trade name Aspirin. Other chemists had already synthesized both drugs, but Bayer was the first company to recognize the commercial potential of these compounds.

Within months of the 1914 declaration of war, however, Bayer bowed to government pressure and began manufacturing trinitrotoluene (TNT). Other military chemicals soon followed, including chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gases for use in chemical weapons. By the end of the war, Bayer was Germanys foremost explosives manufacturer, but that focus cost Bayer its position as a dominant chemical company. To make matters worse, the Treaty of Versailles ordered the confiscation of German foreign assets. Sterling Drug of New York acquired American rights to Bayers patents, the Bayer name, and other trademarks, including Aspirin.

As an I.G. Farben subsidiary during World War II, Bayer entered the darkest period in its history. Recently publicized evidence suggests that I.G. Farben furnished experimental Bayer drugs for tests on concentration camp prisoners. The company stationed scientists at the camps to oversee human research, and provided at least a portion of the funds that supported the horrific experiments of Joseph Mengele, the notorious Nazi Angel of Death. I.G. Farben produced the Zyklon B gas used in countless executions, and the company reaped handsome profits from factories set up near the Auschwitz and Maidanek prison camps to benefit from ready access to slave labor.

After 1933, even everyday routine at the sites was increasingly dictated by the new rulers. In this respect, I.G. Farbenindustrie AG was just as powerless as other industries and virtually all walks of life to dissociate itself from the developments in Germany. The economic preparation for the Second World War and the subsequent war economy also left its mark on I.G. and its sites. During the war period, the darkest chapters of this company were written. As happened throughout industry, prisoners-of-war, foreign workers and forced labor were employed at all the sites. They and above all concentration camp prisoners from Auschwitz build the massive Buna site Monowitz in Upper Schlesia of present-day Poland. Only few survived this murderous chore.

excerpted

The intro to the crimes and punishmant of I.G.Farben "Without I.G.'s immense productive facilities, its far reaching research, varied technical experience and overall concentration of economic power, Germany would not have been in the position to start its aggressive war in September 1939." 1 Such was the judgment rendered by a team of civilian and military experts assigned by General Eisenhower at the close of World War II to make an exhaustive investigation of I.G.'s contribution to the Nazi war effort. Extravagant as this conclusion may have sounded, the record sustains its accuracy.

I.G. truly was a mighty industrial colossus. So huge were its assets admitted and concealed, so superior its technological know-how, and so formidable its array of patents that it dominated the chemical business of the world. I.G. fortified its commercial leadership by constructing a maze of cartels whose members included such industrial giants as Kuhlmann of France, Imperial Chemical Industries of Great Britain, Montecatini of Italy, Aussiger Verein of Czechoslovakia, Boruta of Poland, Mitsui of Japan and Standard Oil (New Jersey), Du Pont, and Dow Chemical of the United States.

I.G. Farben Embraces Nazi Anti-Semitism
Summary: Farben purges Jewish management, takes over Austrian chemical industry through campaign of fear and intimidation:

"...As country after country collapsed in the face of Hitler's `Operation Terror,' I.G.'s embrace of the Nazis became progressively more passionate. As country after country fell to the Wehrmacht's assault, I.G. played jackal to Hitler's lion.

Hoechst AG: The Hoechst AG company is a company that came about as a result of the split of another German company after the dust had settled and the monsters of the Holocaust became more evident. The trials that resulted from the war crimes of WWII resulted in the forced break-up of a German chemical company called I.G. Farben. I.G. Farben was broken up into several smaller companies in the same way being proposed today that Microsoft would be broken up. The only difference is that I.G. Farben was broken up because they were complicit in many ways as criminals of notoriety during war crimes investigations.

3. I.G. Farben: I.G. Farben was the name of the company that was responsible for many of the things that the holocaust has become known for. Without the active partnership with I.G. Farben, Hitler would never have risen to power and prominence in the Chancellery of Germany. In 1932 I.G. gave Adolf Hitler its full support during the election which resulted in Hitler being presented with the Chancellorship of Germany. Without the support of I.G. Farben, and the rest of the German monopolies and cartels, Hitler could not have won his political fight. The German industrialists could see that without Hitler their empires would crumble.

I. G. Farben

During WWII I.G. Farben produced all of Germany's synthetic rubber, lubricating oil, synthetic gasoline, the largest bulk of explosives, 90% of the plastics, and light metals. More often than any other corporation I.G. sat in the center of a web of international cartel agreements. I.G. participated in the plundering of other nations including Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Norway, Holland, Belgium, France and the rest of Central Europe. I.G. took control over every chemical plant of importance in the countries conquered by the Nazi Empire. I.G. played an important role in adapting the industries of those countries to the purposes of the Nazi war machine.
www.ru486registry.com/naziconn.html

Former Slave Laborers Ejected from I.G. Farben Board Meeting I.G. Farben's managers say the company has paid its debt to the victims and that its first duty is to creditors and stockholders. Critics want I.G. Farben to pay eastern European slave laborers who were never compensated. About 8,000 have filed claims, said Henry Mathews of the critical shareholders. After the war I.G. Farben was broken up and its plants were transferred to Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF, today Germany's three largest chemical firms. The liquidation of I.G. Farben is taking so long because it is still trying to reclaim property seized from the company by World War II victors.

Deutsche Bank. Under the direction of Herman Abbs (who never became a Nazi) the bank was responsible for financing the slave labour used by business giants such as Siemens, Magnesian, B.M.W., I.G. Farben and others. The banks wealth quadrupled during the twelve years of Hitler's rule. Arrested after the war by the British, Herman Abbs was asked to help rebuild the German banking industry. This caused much dissension between the British and the Americans who wanted the German economy crushed.

It should be noted that two of the principal American oil companies involved in this transaction, Standard of California and Standard of New Jersey, had significant capital participation by the Nazi I.G. Farben chemical company. (For more on the American-I.G. connection, see RFA #'s 1, 2, 10, 24 as well as FTR-216 and numerous FTR programs dealing with the Bormann organization.) Ibn Saud, the Third Reich, Philby and the Grand Mufti actively conspired to secure the Middle East for Nazi Germany, with Ibn Saud as the head of the "caliphate." (Ibid.; p. 68.) The first side of the program concludes with discussion of the fact that 70% of the investment capital that financed the Third Reich in the 1930s came from the United States and that Allen Dulles was a central figure in arranging this relationship. (Ibid.; p. 57.) After the war, Von Bolschwing went to work for Allen Dulles and the CIA and was brought to the United States by Dulles. (Ibid.; p. 46.) The second side of the program consists of an excerpt of RFA-30, dealing with Von Bolschwings activities after he was brought to the United States.

The program underscores the profound connections of UBS to the Nazi I.G. Farben chemical cartel and, through the I.G. and its successor companies, to the Bormann organization. (Ibid.; pp. 160-161.) One of the three firms that grew out of IG after its breakup at the end of World War II, the Bayer firm saw its stock rise 33% as a result of the anthrax attacks in the United States. ("Biotechnology Stocks Are Gaining on Anthrax Scare" by Charles Piller; Los Angeles Times 10/18/2001; p. C1.) (Bayer is the maker of Cipro, a drug that is used to treat anthrax.)

Nylon's advent created a revolution in the fiber industry. Rayon and acetate had been derived from plant cellulose, but nylon was synthesized completely from petrochemicals. It established the basis for the ensuing discovery of an entire new world of manufactured fibers.

An American Romance
DuPont began commercial production of nylon in 1939. The first experimental testing used nylon as sewing thread, in parachute fabric, and in women's hosiery. Nylon stockings were shown in February 1939 at the San Francisco Exposition and the most exciting fashion innovation of the age was underway.
