When the crime is so minor, having marijuana, and the punishment is so unreasonable, taking people's homes and years of their lives, as well as a very real Twentieth century shunning, one is forced to look for deeper motives. I have come to believe that it is not the proscription of a substance but the systematic oppression of a certain kind of people. There have been a whole series of decisions made, on local, state and federal levels, to the effect that hippies, by which is meant any committed liberal persons, are undesireable and are to be banned, interdicted, harrassed, discouraged, arrested and pee-tested. It is a blatant use of police power to frighten and intimidate millions of people into giving up a heartfelt spiritual practice and lifestyle. There are probably 25 million marijuana smokers in the United States alone, as well as millions more who if not smokers now, are still sentimental about it. The oppression to which I refer is for the purpose of keeping these millions of people off balance to minimize their political power. All those 500,000 pot smokers doing time are out of the political process, present but not able to vote. The urine test is the loyalty oath of the Nineties. The hippies are this season's Jews, this season's Reds... Who are these people? We are the yeast that makes the dough rise. And it's not just us, there's been people like us for centuries. Before there were hippies, there were beatniks, before there beatniks, there were bohemians. The European counterculture ran away from Naz Germany. They brought hundreds of thousands of artists and musicians and writers into this country. Before that there were people like George Bernard Shaw and Voltaire and all the way back to Socrates. There have always been that fraction of people who have said, "I want to see the truth." The real legacy of the sixties generation is the computer revolution BY STEWART BRAND Newcomers to the Internet are often startled to discover themselves not so much in some soulless colony of technocrats as in a kind of cultural Brigadoon - a flowering remnant of the '60s, when hippie communalism and libertarian politics formed the roots of the modern cyberrevolution. At the time, it all seemed dangerously anarchic (and still does to many), but the counterculture's scorn for centralized authority provided the philosophical foundations of not only the leaderless Internet but also the entire personal computer revolution. We - the generation of the '60s - were inspired by the "bards and hot-gospellers of technology," as business historian Peter Drucker described media maven Marshall McLuhan and technophile Buckminster Fuller. And we bought enthusiastically into the exotic technologies of the day, such as Fuller's geodesic domes and psychoactive drugs like LSD. We learned from them, but ultimately they turned out to be blind alleys. Most of our generation scorned computers as the embodiment of centralized control. But a tiny contingent - later called "hackers" - embraced computers and set about transforming them into tools of liberation. That turned out to be the true royal road to the future. "Ask not what your country can do for you. Do it yourself," we said, happily perverting J.F.K.'s Inaugural exhortation. Our ethic of self-reliance came partly from science fiction. We all read Robert Heinlein's epic Stranger in a Strange Land as well as his libertarian screed-novel, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. Hippies and nerds alike reveled in Heinlein's contempt for centralized authority. To this day, computer scientists and technicians are almost universally science-fiction fans. And ever since the 1950s, for reasons that are unclear to me, science fiction has been almost universally libertarian in outlook. As Steven Levy chronicled in his 1984 book, Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution, there were three generations of youthful computer programmers who deliberately led the rest of civilization away from centralized mainframe computers and their predominant sponsor, IBM. "The Hacker Ethic," articulated by Levy, offered a distinctly countercultural set of tenets. Among them: "Access to computers should be unlimited and total." "All information should be free." "Mistrust authority - promote decentralization." "You can create art and beauty on a computer." "Computers can change your life for the better." Nobody had written these down in manifestoes before; it was just the way hackers behaved and talked while shaping the leading edge of computer technology. In the 1960s and early '70s, the first generation of hackers emerged in university computer-science departments. They transformed mainframes into virtual personal computers, using a technique called time sharing that provided widespread access to computers. Then in the late '70s, the second generation invented and manufactured the personal computer. These nonacademic hackers were hard-core counterculture types - like Steve Jobs, a Beatle-haired hippie who had dropped out of Reed College, and Steve Wozniak, a Hewlett-Packard engineer. Before their success with Apple, both Steves developed and sold "blue boxes," outlaw devices for making free telephone calls. Their contemporary and early collaborator, Lee Felsenstein, who designed the first portable computer, known as the Osborne 1, was a New Left radical who wrote for the renowned underground paper the Berkeley Barb. As they followed the mantra "Turn on, tune in and drop out," college students of the '60s also dropped academia's traditional disdain for business. "Do your own thing" easily translated into "Start your own business." Reviled by the broader social establishment, hippies found ready acceptance in the world of small business. They brought an honesty and a dedication to service that was attractive to vendors and customers alike. Success in business made them disinclined to "grow out of" their countercultural values, and it made a number of them wealthy and powerful at a young age. The third generation of revolutionaries, the software hackers of the early '80s, created the application, education and entertainment programs for personal computers. Typical was Mitch Kapor, a former transcendental-meditation teacher, who gave us the spreadsheet program Lotus 1-2-3, which ensured the success of IBM's Apple-imitating PC. Like most computer pioneers, Kapor is still active. His Electronic Frontier Foundation, which he co-founded with a lyricist for the Grateful Dead, lobbies successfully in Washington for civil rights in cyberspace. In the years since Levy's book, a fourth generation of revolutionaries has come to power. Still abiding by the Hacker Ethic, these tens of thousands of netheads have created myriad computer bulletin boards and a nonhierarchical linking system called Usenet. At the same time, they have transformed the Defense Department-sponsored ARPAnet into what has become the global digital epidemic known as the Internet. The average age of today's Internet users, who number in the tens of millions, is about 30 years. Just as personal computers transformed the '80s, this latest generation knows that the Net is going to transform the '90s. With the same ethic that has guided previous generations, today's users are leading the way with tools created initially as "freeware" or "shareware," available to anyone who wants them. Of course, not everyone on the electronic frontier identifies with the countercultural roots of the '60s. One would hardly call Nicholas Negroponte, the patrician head of M.I.T.'s Media Lab, or Microsoft magnate Bill Gates "hippies." Yet creative forces continue to emanate from that period. Virtual reality - computerized sensory immersion - was named, largely inspired and partly equipped by Jaron Lanier, who grew up under a geodesic dome in New Mexico, once played clarinet in the New York City subway and still sports dreadlocks halfway down his back. The latest generation of supercomputers, utilizing massive parallel processing, was invented, developed and manufactured by Danny Hillis, a genial longhair who set out to build "a machine that could be proud of us." Public-key encryption, which can ensure unbreakable privacy for anyone, is the brainchild of Whitfield Diffie, a lifelong peacenik and privacy advocate who declared in a recent interview, "I have always believed the thesis that one's politics and the character of one's intellectual work are inseparable." Our generation proved in cyberspace that where self-reliance leads, resilience follows, and where generosity leads, prosperity follows. If that dynamic continues, and everything so far suggests that it will, then the information age will bear the distinctive mark of the countercultural '60s well into the new millennium. Definition of Insanity During the 1992 Presidential campaign, Al Gore was fond of telling us that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time. With regard to our country's 85 year war on drugs, most of our country's leaders all need to be put in straight jackets. Depending on which government study you read, the total annual deaths attributed to illegal drugs is between 3,800 and 8,500 or about 1% of the deaths caused by alcohol and tobacco. We now incarcerate about one hundred and fifty of our citizens for every death caused by illegal drugs. Many more deaths are caused by our war on drugs than by illegal drugs. We now lead the world in our rate of incarceration. How many of the estimated 77 million U.S. citizens that have used an illegal drug do we need to lock up to win the war on drugs? We are now spending about 50 billion dollars a year and yet according to DEA estimates, less than 10% of the illegal drugs coming into the USA are intercepted. Is 50 billion dollars a year, for a 90 percent failure rate, a good investment? I don't think so. During the prohibition of alcohol the crime rate rose sharply and declined substantially after prohibition. Did we learn any lessons? It doesn't look like it. But as she sits by the fire in her rhinestone-encrusted living room, the colors quivering, it's clear that the spirit of Lotus Carnation still dwells inside Lois Anderson. It was Lotus, as she was known in the late 1960's -- as opposed to Lois, now a 72-year-old part-time librarian, who created "The Throne" (1973), a resplendent creation born of acid and epoxy, designed to transport the sitter into another realm. "We saw patterns everywhere," she recalled the other day, lounging barefoot. "We sat and listened at the feet of every Indian guru, glommed on to every microcosm and macrocosm, then we looked at their art. I got up one morning and just like you say, 'I think I'll have a ham sandwich for lunch,' out came 'The Throne.' " "The Throne," a bejeweled roach clip, two wooden electric guitars, some 40 rock posters, hand-embroidered bluejeans and a hash pipe made from a copper toilet bowl float are a few of the objects on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in "Far Out: Bay Area Design 1967-73," an eclectic retrospective of hippie material culture -- or what Ruth Keffer, a curatorial associate, calls "the flip side of the Tricia Nixon aesthetic." The show, which spans the psychedelic experience of Haight-Ashbury and the back to-the-landers' earthy furniture, runs through Feb. 20. "Far Out" couldn't come at a stranger moment. Though the hippie artists are approaching seniorhood -- they complain of poor eyesight and memory lapses and gave up inhaling and worse long ago -- many remain fierce keepers of the 60's flame, even as new symbols swirl relentlessly around them. (Glitzy dot-com headquarters spring up daily in the city, as young Webmeisters, or "twerps with 'tude,' " as Salon magazine dubbed them, cruise the city of gongs, flowers and beads in freshly minted BMW's.) Like the old lady who refuses to sell her home to the evil developer, some of the hippie artists behind the relics are holed up in handmade hippie houses at the end of unmarked dirt roads in the wilds of Marin County. They still call each other "baby," and their city Frisco. Their houses can often be identified by the cars parked outside, replete with bumper stickers like "My Karma Ran Over My Dogma." Many, like Ms. Anderson, pine for the hallucinogenic heritage of their youth. "You could disappear for days and have incredible life experiences," she wistfully recalled. "I gave up drugs, but the outlook stays. I get nostalgic because it's so weird now. Very weird." The 100 or so objects in the show, including organic wooden furniture that transcends water beds and futons with madras spreads, speak to a moment in which making things by hand was an important personal and political statement. "The emphasis on handmade was a development of do-it-yourself, which has a long line in American history," said Todd Gitlin, the social critic. "There was belief in the glorious capacities of every human being, whether it came to tying beads or writing poetry, most of it highly perishable." Garry Knox Bennett, 65, who retains his Golden Gate Park beard, is a well-known maker of sculptural art furniture and lights in Oakland. He started his career as a crafts entrepreneur by forming a company called Squirkenworks that provided peace symbols and roach clips to head shops on Haight Street. He still keeps prized ones on a glass shelf. "Everybody was making stuff, whether you could paint or not," he said. "For me, the 60's were the last time an entrepreneur could make a good living with his hands." "Thank God for hippies," he added. "You could sell them anything." The exhibition, curated by Aaron Betsky, is rather hallucinatory, putting forgotten jewelry and clothes behind plexiglas and hoisting chairs and beds onto pedestals, the kind of treatment often reserved for Egyptian scarabs. Many of the objects, created to be anti-establishment, look like they don't want to be there. "It's ironic," said Paul Krassner, the author and satirist. "The main thing about the 60's was its spirit, which was nonmaterial. But you can't put spirit in a museum." There are some mysterious omissions -- among them, record album covers, Zap comics and underground papers like The Oracle. Taken together, objects like Al Garvey's stained glass and cedar Dutch door and Wavy Gravy's patchwork jumpsuit form a peculiar blend of the natural and the plastic-fantastic. Mr. Betsky's premise is that, with the counterculture now 30 years old, it is time to re-examine its aesthetic, which he sees as an extension of the Bay Area Arts and Crafts tradition. The big news may be that contrary to popular belief, psychedelic art and craft was not produced while under the influence. As Ms. Anderson put it, "No way could you do picky-picky work with your mind blown." Stewart Brand, the founder of The Whole Earth Catalog, called much of the work "bright and swirly and filled with meaning." But it sometimes led, he said, to "pretty dreadful graphic art." The period's devil-may-care zest is evident in the boots and shoes by the Apple Cobbler, a k a Mickey McGowan, a longtime vegan, who after apprenticing with a Laguna sandalmaker, began fashioning over-the-top footwear out of fabric like brocade. Inspired by assemblage artists like Ed Kienholz, Mr. McGowan's shoes integrated rubber duck decoys and toys, creating soles so bouncy, as he put it, "it was like walking on Super Balls." Today, the former Apple Cobbler makes a living from the past, working as an estate liquidator and selling extras from his archive of some 15,000 record albums -- his specialty is strange, neglected music by folks like Jim Backus -- kept in a warehouse. And then there's what he calls the Unknown Museum, an indescribable welter of some 100,000 pop-cultural artifacts (from lunch boxes to board games) in his modest home overlooking the 101 Freeway ramp in San Rafael. ("I never got into the real estate thing," he said ruefully.) It can be difficult to separate some creations from their creators. Mary Ann Schildknecht, now 52 and still painting T-shirts, made her intricately embroidered blouse and skirt, a collage of blue sky, mountains, Janis Joplin and other images, during a two-year prison sentence in Italy for smuggling hashish. "I had a lot of time left," she said. The artist Clayton Lewis, who died in 1995, hand-built what may be the quintessential hippie bed, a heroic bohemian masterpiece of wood and paint. It was found in an abandoned Miwok Indian cottage on an obscure cove near Point Reyes, where he lived. What the exhibition implies is how central the bed was to 60's culture. "It wasn't simply a place to put in your eight hours," said the artist's son, Peter, who is leading an effort to preserve the cottages. "My father loved women -- what can I tell you?" David McFadden, chief curator of the American Craft Museum in New York, noted that cultural artifacts like beds and blouses "may become touchstones for memory in a way that some fine arts can't." He added, "Objects like this may look stupid, but they're not mute." High in the Marin hills, where humble hippie shacks now fetch mid-six-figure prices, Al Garvey and his wife, Barbara, now 67 and 65 respectively, live the life they lived 34 years ago, when Mr. Garvey, a professional door carver, stumbled upon a wooden wine fermenting tank on the side of the road in Sonoma and decided to build a studio out of it. The studio, now part of his house, "smelled like wine for five years afterwards," he recalled somewhat mistily. Like a skip in a record, "I kind of got stuck in the period," Mr. Garvey said cheerfully, adding, "I can't bear to think of leaving it." His house is an evocative time warp, with a big fireplace made of Mexican river stones and relief sculptures made from madrone wood off the forest floor. He continues carving doors. "I still get great elation out of creating something," he said. "What I loved about that period was the extemporaneous expression." His two daughters, now grown, were less enamored of the spontaneity. "They're yuppies," he said with affection. "They make more in a year than I've ever made in my whole life." Other woodworkers rejected the hedonism of San Francisco's hippie culture, opting to move to places like Bolinas, on the Marin coast. "This is where the flower children landed when they hit 50," said the furniture maker Art Espenet Carpenter, 79. Mr. Carpenter continues to influence generations of California artisans. His smooth rounded corners and soft edges in pieces like the Shell Desk, in the exhibition, were copied so widely the style became known as "California roundover." "I'm hung up on round," he said, giving a tour of the hand built five-building compound he created in a dense thicket of trees; it includes a round kitchen and library composed of 4-by-8-foot bays, and an oculus ceiling encircled by wooden beams. The paths snake through Asian dogwood, revealing a working privy covered in vines with a magnificent burled seat. J. B. Blunk, 73, is known for his freeform redwood sculpture and furniture that bring out the character of trees. His house, built by hand in the 1960's on the Point Reyes peninsula, is reached through a graceful sculptured arch of 1,200-year-old redwoods. Like him, the house is refined and gnarly. It is artfully built of driftwood, telephone poles, schoolhouse windows and whatever other materials were at hand. Mr. Blunk, who is perhaps best known for a three-ton curving redwood outcropping of connected tables designed for the restaurant Greens in San Francisco, studied stoneware and ceramics in Japan, befriending the artist Isamu Noguchi and the California surrealist Gordon Onslow Ford, a neighbor and patron. His kitchen table is a piece of redwood, vaguely whale shaped. Perhaps no one has consciously held on to hippie culture more than Wavy Gravy, who was unofficial ringmaster of the hippie movement before he became a Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor. Founder of the Hog Farm commune, which ran a pig for president in 1968, Wavy Gravy, 63 and formerly Hugh Romney, lives in Berkeley in a cottagey compound of redwood bungalows that could someday become the hippie Williamsburg. A platform bed is built into the living room, ready for crashers. "They'll probably bury me a hippie," he said, sprawling on his bed in a meditative pose, surrounded by artifacts from the era, including a plaster sculpture of Jerry Garcia turning into a bear. Wavy Gravy, who runs a children's clown camp north of San Francisco, learned the power of objects early on: when he walked a plastic fish on a leash and wore a red nose, it seemed to prevent the police from arresting him. "It's hard to beat up on a clown," he said. At a show like "Far Out," it still is. The former San Francisco State lecturer and freelance philosopher then pushed back from the lunch table in his Tennessee home, glanced over at his wife, Ina May, and issued a bold prophecy: Millions of '60s idealists who "sold out" in the 1980s and 1990s -- the ones who went out and got real jobs -- are poised to turn on, tune in and drop out once again. And they're all going to need some place to live. Gaskin has a dream, and knows that if he builds it, they will come. Get ready for Rosinante, a retirement village for aging hippies. "When they write the '60s history centuries from now, the hippies will have a name like the Renaissance or the Reformation," said Gaskin, who named his latest dream after Don Quixote's horse. "We did change the world, and we're not finished changing the world." To understand the dream, one must understand the quixotic journey. Those of you who were hanging around in the late 1960s and early 1970s may recall Gaskin, who led hundreds of hippies on an infamous 1971 bus caravan across America. Hippiedom had blossomed in the cool gray city of love, and Gaskin's eclectic lectures on mysticism, politics, alternative lifestyles and LSD took on a life of their own. It was called the Monday Night Class, or "tripping instructions," and as many as 2,000 stoned seekers followed Gaskin as he took his show to the Straight Theater on Haight Street, the Oddfellows Hall and finally out to Playland by the Beach. The tribe eventually landed in the green rolling hills of southern Tennessee, a magical place where the rednecks learned to love those shaggy survivors of the '60s. Dubbed the tie-dyed Amish, Gaskin and flock wound up in one of the poorest counties in Tennessee, where it was easier to find cheap moonshine than Orange Sunshine, where hillbillies outnumbered hippies. But the land was $70 an acre, and the locals didn't shoot them on sight. So they stayed and founded the Farm. It didn't start out well. Gaskin and a couple cohorts got busted for growing pot and did a little time in the Tennessee state prison. Meanwhile, back on the Farm, there were some very lean, very cold winters. But by 1977, the commune had grown in to a functioning experimental community of a thousand men, women and children. They had their own school, flour mill, cannery, medical clinic, publishing business, and even their own telephone system -- "Beatnik Bell." They all contributed to a communal treasury, giving them the same tax status as a Catholic monastery. But the Farm was not just an economic and ecological experiment. It was a spiritual community, forged in many cases by the bond of shared psychedelic experiences. "We were water brothers," Gaskin said. "We were collective in a spiritual sense." He said the same connection inspired some of the "four-marriages" and other group living arrangements on the Farm. "Some of the double couples were sort of a fallout from LSD. People who tripped together bonded. Then we'd say, 'Let's just get a house together.' " Gaskin became a licensed Tennessee cleric, married many Farm couples and led Sunday morning services. They'd meet in a meadow on the commune or inside the schoolhouse. Gaskin would draw from the mystical teachings of various world religions -- a synthesis he called "the psychedelic testimony of the saints" or the "totality of the manifestation." The population peaked in the early 1980s with 1,500 commune members. And then it all collapsed. Faced with too much debt, radical poverty and too many mouths to feed, the Farm stopped being a true commune where everything was jointly owned and all took from a common treasury. It reorganized itself in 1983 into a collective, where members were forced to pay monthly dues and only the Farm's 1,700 acres were held in common. Most people here call those bitter days "the changeover." Gaskin calls it "a coup d'etat followed by a downsizing." Group homes and group marriages dissolved. Many members wandered off, unable to make it in a community where they suddenly needed real money to survive. "As the kids got older, it was obvious that there wasn't the money living communally that we needed for braces or other things you need when kids got older," said Barbara Bloomfield, one of the surviving members. "We were so busy being in community -- but that wasn't generating any money, and we needed money to pay the bank for the land." Those who remained paid off the debt. Today, there are only 80 to 90 voting members in this land-rich, cash-poor enterprise. Gaskin, 67, is still here, but he's no longer seen as the leader of the tribe. But he's still got one vote, lots of energy and even more ideas -- including Rosinante, a kind of Sun City for the '60s set. Yet even that master stroke had some quixotic detours. In 1996, he published a book titled "Cannabis Spirituality," an ode to wonders of getting high on pot. He said he hasn't taken LSD since before the caravan left San Francisco. "We don't do acid on the Farm," he said. "Peyote and mushrooms are a matter of personal conscience." A few years ago, Gaskin took the politics of pot national. He tried to become president of the United States, running against Ralph Nader in an unsuccessful bid for the Green Party nomination. That didn't work, so it's back to Rosinante. "When we first started talking about Rosinante, collectivity was not interesting to people. They were in their peak earning years," Gaskin said. "When they get a little older, collectivity will get interesting again." Donnie Rainboat, an aging hippie, is building one of Rosinante's first homes. "It ain't gonna just be a bunch of people just comin' 'round here to hang out and smoke dope," said Rainboat, who is 58 and recovering from a recent stay in the hospital. "If you want to come in here, start building a house and show us you have some incentive to stay." For his retirement village, Gaskin bought 100 acres of land adjacent to the Farm. He has plans (but no money) to build an octagonal community center with a clinic, kitchen, Laundromat and media room with computers and Internet access. Community residents -- like Rainboat -- build their own cabins on the property, and agree to turn them over to the community when they die. Other longtime Farmies don't put much stock in Gaskin's latest project. "Stephen likes to dream," said Joel Kachinsky, smiling. At the same time, Kachinsky turned 60 last year, and suddenly, retirement and its mixed blessings don't seem so far away. Three decades have gone by since Kachinsky, a former Vista volunteer, came to San Francisco and stumbled on Gaskin and the Monday Night Class. "There were a lot of gurus around, and he billed himself as the American guru," Kachinsky said. "He was saying heavy stuff that needed to be said. "When we were communal, our level of trust put us in an extraordinary level of consciousness," he said. "There are about 4,000 members of our tribe, folks who took the vow of poverty and were seriously doing this thing. That body is our church, or group soul. "Since the changeover, we've been in a dysfunctional state and back in ordinary consciousness. We originally came here to decondition ourselves from our capitalist conditioning and recondition ourselves for a better society." Now that the Farm is no longer a commune, all kinds of questions arise about why it exists, who really "owns" it, and who can come back or join up. "We have to deal with that before we hand this over to the next generation, " Kachinsky said. "If we don't, it could be a real mess here in another 30 years." Of the thousands of communes that formed in the 1960s and 1970s, the Farm is one of the relatively few that survived -- albeit in an altered economic arrangement. And Rosinante, which may never be more than a collection of cabins built by a spaced-out band of aging, unrepentant hippies, is something of an inside joke to those who've watched the rise and fall of a quixotic rebel. Webster's defines quixotic as "foolishly impractical, especially in the pursuit of ideals marked by rash lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action." That's Stephen Gaskin. While he no longer calls the shots on the Farm, he's taking one more shot at the dream. His eyes twinkling behind his spectacles, Gaskin tells it like it is. "I guess I wasn't quite done running something," he said. Known simply as The Farm, the sprawling collective operates, among other things, a midwife service, a soy products company, a mushroom grower and a factory producing personal radiation detectors. Established on a 1,800-acre site in 1971, The Farm has outlived nearly all of its tie-dyed contemporaries with a mix of entrepreneurship and idealism, and a touch of sweat. "We were hippies wanting to live together, and we accepted the discipline it took to do that," said Stephen Gaskin, the founder of the commune. Gaskin, now 68, was teaching in San Francisco when in 1966 he began holding meetings every Monday night on "what was happening outside his window," according The Farm's history posted on its Web site. The crowds grew, so Gaskin took the gatherings on the road, attracting a throng of followers. The caravan of about 1,500 bought some land in the Lewis County hills and The Farm was formed. The early days, which Gaskin says were guided by agreements "looser than handshakes," made it though tough times. Some bad investments and an equally poor national economy in the late '70s put The Farm about $400,000 in debt, says Douglas Stevenson, a Farm resident since 1973. What resulted was "the changeover" in 1983, which Stevenson described as the decision to make "every adult responsible for bringing in some cash." Part of The Farm remains collectively held -- the land and the commercial buildings remain owned by everyone -- but all residents must work. Stevenson contributes his share of work through Village Media. It started out as a satellite installation company, but now does audio, video and Web work. Phil Schweitzer, who works with Stevenson, can recall recording Gaskin's first Monday classes on reel-to-reel film. Now he sits editing a couple's wedding using a high-tech video system Village Media is testing for a consumer magazine. Except for their casual jeans and T-shirts, these graying men in their 50s don't look or act much like the stereotypical, free-spirit hippies. They live with other residents in modest homes spread liberally across the vast fields and forests of the commune property, and they talk wistfully about how they once took their children to play Little League games in nearby Lawrenceburg. People here may live under a different system than others, Stevenson says, but nobody came here "trying to escape from anything." When it comes to money, The Farm's handle on the books is less exacting than at most businesses. Leaders say they don't know what the commune's overall annual income is. But SE International, the personal radiation detector factory which Farm residents say is the commune's most profitable business, had revenues of $2.1 million. Book publishing was The Farm's original business, and remains collectively owned. Business has grown from the first title -- "This Is The Farm Book," published in 1974 -- to a catalog of vegetarian books including "Flax: The Super Food" and "Native Plants, Native Healing." Warren Jefferson, who came to The Farm on the original caravan and works at the publishing company, says he doesn't think The Farm has turned its back on its hippie roots to become just another capitalist tool. Instead, he says, The Farm "honors" free enterprise and hasn't compromised the original "right livelihood" ideals, such as helping mankind by excelling at a task. Still, he acknowledges: "It's always been difficult to pin down what we're about and what we believe in." Gaskin also doesn't see any compromise in The Farm's success, but can't help but notice the inescapable change in the residents who came here 30 years ago to rebel against their parents and society.
