How ALEC, the Koch Brothers Led CABAL and "The Amicus Project" Interfere in Federal Courts ... from the Daily Kos

This article by Bob Sloan of the Daily Kos describes how ALEC and the Koch brothers have been filing "friend of the Court" briefs in federal court cases around the country to advance an agenda important to their members and corporate interests. The problem is, what is in the best interests of ALEC and their friends all too often is not in our best interests. And if Romney wins in November and the republican propaganda campaign results in them taking the US Senate also, you can bet that this problem will get worse, not better.

The legal terms in the article can get a little technical, but the information it contains is worth the time, and really makes one think about what you can do to help counter this effort.

Turning State Legislatures into Brothels

Some ask: how this has come to pass? Who is responsible for undermining our democracy and corrupting our elected representatives?

How Are ALEC Laws Undermining Our Democracy?

ALEC is funded by the usual suspects: the Koch brothers, Exxon Mobil, and the NRA to name a few. "The group boasts that twenty percent or so of the nearly 1,000 bills it introduces each year become law." Over 2,000 state legislators are said to belong to ALEC, of which most are Republican.

In addition to the Florida bill that ALEC and the NRA call the "Castle Doctrine Act," (also known as the "Stand Your Ground" law which will likely be used as a defense in the Trayvon Martin killing), ALEC model bills have served as the template for "voter ID" laws that swept the country in 2011, for the "voucher" programs that privatize public education, for anti-environmental bills, anti-immigrant legislation, and for the wave of anti-worker legislation pushed over the past year in Wisconsin, Ohio, New Hampshire, Indiana, and most recently, in Arizona.

When will the United States start thinking beyond bars?

This nation is now spending over $200 billion a year on a justice system that locks up more people than any country on earth. We have more prisoners than China. More than Russia. More than anyone. This colossal system is hitting our communities with staggering financial and human costs — gobbling resources that should be going to strengthening communities.

That’s why we’re teaming up with a slew of great organizations and launching a major new campaign at Brave New Foundation. The campaign is called Beyond Bars. It aims to change Americans’ thinking and inspire action through short videos and shareable graphics exposing the U.S. system of mass incarceration.

Our new video shows the prison system as the giant beast that it is...

This video was done in partnership with a host of groups, showing the widespread hunger to create a sense of public urgency around mass incarceration:

Fox News: The No. 1 Name in Murder Fantasies

Bill O'Reilly's recent "joke" about decapitating Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank was only the latest example of a demented Fox News culture that permits on-air personalities to fantasize about assassination and other forms of violence against those deemed enemies of the station, its personalities or their worldview.During the cable channel's ... continue reading

Guns and Terrorism: Two Unasked Question in Tucson Mass Murder

Question: How does a mentally unstable man who was kicked out of school and had run-ins with the law buy an assault weapon? The NRA Can’t Take Yes For An Answer

Earlier this week, one of the biggest backers of the Republican Party, the NRA, refused to meet with President Obama to discuss vital gun control measures supported by 86% of Americans, 80% of gun owners, and roughly 70% of their own membership. President Obama pointed out in a Sunday op-ed ... continue reading

Lots of Blood on Lots of Hands

Guns don’t kill people. Bullets kill people. And bullets come from guns fired by people to kill other people. And we saw this again Monday at a high school in Ohio when one student was killed and four others wounded (two critically) by a young man who fired away in ... continue reading

ALEC Ratified NRA-Conceived Law That May Protect Trayvon Martin's Killer

A Florida law that may protect the man who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February is the template for an American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) "model bill" that has been pushed in other states. The bill was brought to ALEC by the National Rifle Association (NRA). Florida's "stand ... continue reading

In response to the Feds overzealous prosecution of hactivist Aaron Swarz, the hacker group Anonymous has launched "Operation Last Resort". They have taken over the server used by the US Sentencing Commission and stolen the encrypted files. The files have been distributed to mirrors and hold the encryption keys and they are going to release the files if the US Government doesn't respond to their demands for legal reforms.

Anonymous is accusing the government of "bullying" using outdated laws resulting in Aaron Swarz's suicide (some call it murder). Read more here:

The Neocons, including the Kocheads. Sell treatments. They solve problems, even if they have to create them. They sell us poisons that make us sick and then sell us drugs to treat the sickness. They fabricate non victim crimes and then rent cages to the government at thousands of dollars a year per head. Mandatory sentencing bought and paid for by the NRA cages over a million Americans on non violent vices. Same as the forced rehabilitation. Selling cardboard foods leads to drug treatment medicines. War sells wartoys and fossil fools to run them. We have become a nation of dysfunction sales and service. Cannabis Hemp and Ganja can by pass Wall St. But they keep it outlawed and not a renewable competition. Koch is in the business of selling treatments. Oil we don't need when we can grow plastic and fuel. Private for profit tax paid prisons contracting all 50 states, requiring full capacity. Meaning mandatory minimums long term investments. Monsanto or Exxon or DuPont or Coors all selling products. Halliburton sells wars with the help of the corporate media and the dick cheney. Stringing along teabog ditto's. Koch's and Diebold sell elections. If we would think of where the money goes and not just the fact it is wasted or taxes. With elections we only hear about the cost and how much each spends. Hundreds of millions. Same with initiatives. In dollars and taxes for the processors and government authorizations. What we should look it is who gets that money. Madison Ave ad agency's, Fox, MSNBCNN and the alphabet channels. Bumper stickers to the horde of lawyers. Dyncorps no bid contracts reaping them billions in Lieraq aren't seen as wasteful. Selling the Ganjawar profits copshops and keeps out a viable product from the market shelves. Koch knows if you want to gut the regulations you must get elected. That is the end to their any means necessary. Buying politicians or swiftboat trashing opponents. Bain outsourcing and gutting the work force with disposible temps, scabs and high turn around taxbreaks. Hacking votes or rigging counts. Disenfranchising as Harris did in Florida or redistricting as they did in Texas Oklahoma and Ohio. The end justifies the means.

"The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to be believed, for the vast masses of the nation are in the depths of their hearts more easily deceived than they are consciously and intentionally bad. The primitive simplicity of their minds renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one, for they themselves often tell little lies but would be ashamed to tell a big one."
