Don't Go To 4/20 Marijuana Smoke-Out By Lance Vaillancourt
CN Source: Daily Camera   April 17, 2009 Boulder, Colo
"I believe it is a peaceful way to demonstrate against what is probably the most laughable and unenforceable law in the United States,"
"While I partly go for the spectacle, I do believe there needs to be some reform in regard to this country's drug policy."
For their part, CU police officials are taking the same stance as last year, when they issued zero tickets -- despite the massive crowd of pot smokers.
"Students bringing objects to the rally that could be construed as potentially injurious -- such as trampolines, slacklines or glass items -- would give officers more of an incentive to become involved.
We may ticket a whole bunch of people; we may ticket no one, We'll just have to wait to see what unfolds in front of us and act accordingly."
Cmdr. Tim McGraw
This year's event -- held at the traditional time of 4:20 p.m. April 20 -- will be preceded by the National Forum on Marijuana, a weekend conference on campus hosted by the CU chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
Guest speakers at the event include Jessica Peck Corry, who was behind last year's ballot measure to end affirmative action on Colorado college campuses; Cmdr. Tom Sloan of the Boulder County Drug Task Force; and Steve Bloom, the founding editor of High Times magazine.

UC Santa Cruz Cracking Down on 420 By Karina Rusk
CN Source: ABC News April 18, 2009 Santa Cruz, CA
Some new restrictions are being placed on a longtime pot-smoking festival. A large crowd is expected on the UC Santa Cruz campus Monday for a festival known as "the 420." The university is trying to keep out the unwanted pot smokers. The annual migration to Porter Meadow at UC Santa Cruz is well documented on YouTube. The 420 event takes place every year on April 20th at 4:20 in the afternoon.
But, students say it is one day in which open cannabis smoking is generally regarded as free speech.
"It's an opportunity for the student body to express solidarity for drug reform policy,"

Holiday Hints at Change By Jesse McKinley
CN Source: New York Times April 19, 2009 San Francisco, CA

On Monday, somewhere in New York City, 420 people will gather for High Times magazine’s annual beauty pageant, a secretly located and sold-out event that its sponsor says will “turn the Big Apple into the Baked Apple and help us usher in a new era of marijuana freedom in America.”
They will not be the only ones partaking: April 20 has long been an unofficial day of celebration for marijuana fans, an occasion for campus smoke-outs, concerts and cannabis festivals. Read More...
4/20: National Pot Smokers Day By Anthony Papa

April 20 is "National Pot Smoking Day." It's a day where people across the world celebrate in the conspicuous consumption of the magical herb, marijuana. It's an unofficial counterculture holiday that is based on the simple concept of smoking some cannabis and being happy.
The history of its origin is somewhat cloudy. I found some interesting theories into the beginning of this toker's holiday. The most convincing account was recorded in the San Francisco Chronicle. Read More...

Mostly Happy
'One of the problems that the marijuana-reform movement consistently faces is that everyone wants to talk about what marijuana does, but no one ever wants to look at what marijuana prohibition does. Marijuana never kicks down your door in tbe middle of the night. Marijuana never locks up sick and dying people, does not suppress medical research, does not peek in bedroom windows.'

It was a warmer-than-average, sunny day in Boulder on Sunday. And around 4:20 p.m. on the University of Colorado campus, the sky grew unusually hazy. Cheers erupted along with a heavy cloud of smoke as an estimated 10,000 people... mostly CU students joined by friends from out of town and some local residents... lit up to celebrate at an annual pot-smoking rally.

Known as 'The Man Who Hipped the World' and' The Link Between the Races,' Mezzrow sold fat joints called mezzrolls. Soon a new piece of Harlem slang emerged: Something genuine was described as 'mezz.'

420 Day: Medical Marijuana's Big Bash
By Mary Spicuzza and Scott Mayerowitz

Welcome to April 20. While it might just seem like a normal Monday to you, for many in the cannabis culture, today -- also known as 420 day -- is a holiday to celebrate and consume marijuana. Across the country, legalization advocates, medical marijuana dispensaries and recreational users plan to celebrate. Read More...

Warren Haynes, the Allman Brothers Band guitarist, routinely plays with the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, now touring as The Dead. He's just finished a Dead show in Washington, D.C. and gets a pop quiz from the Huffington Post. Where does 420 come from? He pauses and thinks, hands on his side. "I don't know the real origin. I know myths and rumors," he says. "I'm really confused about the first time I heard it. It was like a police code for smoking in progress or something. What's the real story?" Read More...
Marijuana Advocates See 'Tipping Point' By Brian Montopoli
CN Source: CBS News April 20, 2009 CBS

On yesterday's episode of Fox's animated sitcom "Family Guy," one of the main characters - a dog named Brian - is arrested for possession of marijuana. He subsequently goes on a mission to legalize the drug, at one point earnestly arguing that it is only outlawed because William Randolph Hearst wanted to keep hemp production from hurting his paper interests in the 1930s. Yes, the argument was articulated by an animated dog. And yes, the response from one of the other characters was, well, a fart. But still: Last night, a serious argument for marijuana legalization was articulated on a major American cable network during prime time. Read More...
Thousands Fill CU's Norlin Quad with Smoke for 420

CN Source: Daily Camera April 20, 2009 Boulder, Colo.

A sudden roar of loud cheering — and quite a bit of coughing — erupted across the University of Colorado's smoke-filled Norlin Quad at exactly 4:20 p.m. today as thousands of students and pot enthusiasts celebrated what's become known as International Cannabis Day. Although CU officials have not yet released an estimate of the crowd's size, observers said it appeared today's 4/20 gathering was larger than last year's, which drew more than 10,000 people. 420 at UCSC "Gets Bigger Every Year"
by Bradley indybay Apr 21st, 2009
Staying true to tradition, thousands of people celebrated Four Twenty in and around Porter Meadow at UC Santa Cruz on April 20th, 2009. Four Twenty (420) is a time of day when people smoke cannabis together. For that reason, April 20th has evolved into a counterculture holiday where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis. Porter Meadow at UCSC has traditionally been the largest 420 gathering point around. Despite the restrictions established by the UCSC administration and police to curtail the unorganized convergence, people showed they were determined to celebrate Four Twenty, with friends and strangers, in the Porter Meadow.

Prepartions Underway for Annual 420 Gathering at UC Santa Cruz
Tue Apr 14 2009 (Updated 04/21/09)
Each year on April 20th, at 4:20pm, people celebrate and smoke cannabis together. One of the biggest gathering spots in California, perhaps the biggest, is Porter Meadow at UC Santa Cruz. It's a large event for the whole community - a place where thousands of people can have a picnic, play with musical instruments, frisbees, kites and just have fun. It's in a safe and relatively secluded location and problems are rare.

On Monday, Winnipeg Police Inspector Dave Thorne stood atop the Legislative Building's steps and gazed out at a throng of hundreds, perhaps thousands of people publicly -- flauntingly -- breaking the law by smoking marijuana, and observed: "Our view is this is a worldwide protest for the proponents of decriminalizing marijuana.  From a police point of view, it's more about providing a safe environment for people to express their views.  It doesn't mean we promote the breaking of acts or statutes, but we're trying to be realistic."
